Things to do
Playa Avellanas - Referred to by locals as “little Hawaii,” Playa Avellana packs extraordinary offshore waves that can reach up to eighteen feet, making it an ideal destination for experienced surfers from around the world. Additionally, this secluded white sand beach invites tranquility and peace. It is a great spot to sit by the beachfront bar and take in the sights and sounds of the ocean. Lola’s is located here!
Playa Grande - Playa Grande is one of my favorite beaches and it is just across the estuary from Tamarindo. It is internationally popular for its reputations as one of Costa Rica’s best surfing spots as well as being home to Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas, a nesting ground of the largest marine reptile, the leatherback turtle. It is a HUGE white sand beach that you can spend the entire day at and grab some lunch at Taco Star (see above).
Playa Conchal - 20 minutes north of Tamarindo, it is one of the only Pacific Coast beaches with crystal clear water, similar to that of famed beaches along the Caribbean. There aren’t big waves (not a good spot to surf), but it's an amazing spot to lay out and relax, go for a swim, rent paddle boards or jet ski.
Golf - Reserva Conchal - Bathed in the luscious greens and striking blues of the Pacific Ocean, the scenery of the course is enough to keep you entertained. Aside from the captivating surroundings, the 6,956-yard, par-71 championship golf course is one of the best in Costa Rica.
ATV - Check out one of the many companies that offer this. My favorite was Flamingo Adventures where you spend 2.5 hours following the north coast up from Flamingo stopping to see some beautiful vistas, beach fronts and natural beauty. See Sugar Beach, Danta Beach, Prieta Beach, Penca Beach and Potrero Beach. Bring your bathing suit so you can stop along the way and swim in the ocean.
Day Trip to Rincon de la Vieja National Park - Such an amazing full day trip where you get to tube down rapids, zipline, climb up and rappel down canyons along side of waterfalls, bathe in the hot mud pools and zip line across the treetops where you will see monkeys left and right. Adventure Tours Hacienda is my favorite but there are a lot of companies that offer this.
Raft the Tenorio River - If you’re up for an adventure day, book a white water rafting trip on the Upper Tenorio River in Guanacaste. You will plunge through twists, turns and drops down eight miles of intense, challenging rapids. The Tenorio River has everything a rafter desires, including a one-of-a-kind Class V 12-foot drop! For rafters, this is a must-run river. Check out 3Monkeys Tour for this!
Deep sea fishing - Rhino Charger Sport Fishing offers great half day and full day deep sea fishing trips. Many different restaurants will cook you up an amazing dinner with the fish you catch that day.
Sailing - Sailing Hibiscus offers an amazing half day sunset catamaran sailing trip departing from Tamarindo Beach. It includes an open bar, snorkeling, a late bbq lunch and one of the best sunsets ever while you are sailing back in.
